Sustainable Ocean Use

In 2015, all Member States of the UN jointly adopted the "Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development" with the aim of putting the planet and its resources to a more sustainable use in the future, as well as recognizing that already now there are too many irreversible human interventions into the Earth’s ecosystem. The UN website provides a comprehensive overview over the 17 Sustainable Development Goadls (SDGs) of the Agenda 2030, along with a number of additional links.
SDG 14 adresses the Utilization of the Oceans: It comprises a broad spectrum of measures, such as the restriction of overfishing, establishment of protective areas for ecosystems, and technology transfer, each complete with target dates and performance criteria. In parallel, the world community is actually concerned about the biodiversity in the oceans. The battle to preserve biodiversity started with the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), adopted by 150 states on occasion of the 1992 Rio Conference. (https://www.cbd.int/convention/).
